Wood That Was Engineered Out of Its Bad Habits
LP SmartSide is wood strand and fiber bonded with resin and treated all the way through the board, not dipped or coated at the surface. That treatment is the whole point: it is what keeps the ordinary wood problems, rot and termites, out of a product that still cuts, handles, and takes a nail like wood. It works with standard saws, which is part of why an engineered wood wall goes up faster than a cement one.
It comes as panel, usually four feet wide and eight, nine, or ten feet tall, and as lap in several exposures, with matching trim and soffit from the same line. Panel and lap from one system means the trim profiles actually match the siding instead of being close enough, and that shows up at every window and corner once the wall is painted.

Why LP SmartSide Is a Top Choice for Puget Sound Homes
The best choice for engineered wood siding in greater Seattle
The trade is that it is still wood. It burns, so it is the wrong answer where a wall needs a noncombustible rating. And every cut opens the board up, which is why field cut ends get sealed before the piece goes on the wall, and why the clearances to grade, roofing, and decks are not negotiable here. Get those two things right and it is a long lived wall. Get them wrong and you are looking at swollen bottom edges in five years.
Work With UsStyles We Offer
Most houses use one profile in the field of the wall and a second on the gables. Every style comes out of one system with matching trim, so the profiles line up at every corner and opening.

Engineered Wood Questions
See All FAQsIt usually lands close to fiber cement on material and below it on labor, because the boards are lighter and cut with ordinary tools. On a two story house that labor gap is real money. The online estimator will put a range on your house, and the home estimate replaces it with measured, itemized pricing.
Not if it is installed the way it is meant to be. The treatment runs through the board rather than sitting on the surface, so the material itself resists rot and insects. What causes trouble is a board sitting on a deck, buried behind a flower bed, or with an unsealed cut end wicking water. Those are install problems, and they are the ones we are strictest about.
Cement does not burn and is dimensionally stable in a way no wood product matches. Engineered wood is far lighter, takes an impact without cracking, and holds a fastener better, which means less labor and no dust control on site. If a noncombustible wall is a requirement, cement wins outright. If it is not, the two are a genuine toss up and we price both.
It arrives primed and ready for paint, or prefinished from the factory in a set palette. Primed board should be painted promptly once it is up rather than left through a winter. After that you are on a normal exterior repaint cycle, and the finish rather than the board is what determines it.
We do not recommend it. Furring over old siding pushes windows and trim out of line, and it hides whatever condition the sheathing is in. Tear off gives you a wall we can warranty.

Why Choose Sealed Siding?
The Best Choice for LP SmartSide Engineered Wood Siding Installation in Seattle
- Every field cut end sealed: The treatment runs through the board, but a fresh cut is still a raw edge. Cuts get sealed before the piece goes up, not touched up afterward from a ladder.
- Clearances held to the letter: Clear of grade, clear of roofing, clear of decks and hardscape. These are the numbers the manufacturer warranty turns on, and they are the first thing a claim looks at.
- A vented rainscreen behind the face: Furring over the weather barrier gives the back of the board a way to dry, which matters more for a wood based product here than for anything else we hang.
- Flashing at every horizontal joint: Z flashing with a drip at panel seams, head flashing over every opening, and kickouts where a roof meets a wall. Caulk is not flashing.
