The Real Thing, Detailed to Last
Western red cedar is naturally rot and insect resistant, dimensionally stable, and it takes a stain in a way no manufactured product quite matches. On a craftsman, a midcentury, or anything cabin adjacent, it is often the only material that looks correct on the house.
It is also organic, which means it lives or dies on how it is detailed and maintained. The single biggest factor is whether every face, including the back and both cut ends, gets sealed before installation. A board sealed on five sides drinks water through the sixth and cups within a season.

Why Cedar Is Still the Classic Choice for Northwest Homes

Plan on refinishing. A clear or semitransparent finish on an exposed elevation wants attention every three to five years here, sooner on a south or west wall. If that is not a commitment you want to make, we will point you at engineered wood, which gets you the grain without the calendar.

Cedar is also the material homeowners most often use as an accent, on gables, entries, and dormers, with a lower maintenance product in the field of the wall.

Cedar Siding Questions
See All FAQsThirty years and well beyond is achievable, but only with a rain screen, six side sealing, good clearances, and a finish that gets renewed on schedule. Cedar nailed straight to sheathing and then left alone can start failing inside a decade here.
Stain shows the grain, wears by fading rather than peeling, and is far easier to renew because there is little to strip. Paint gives a crisper, more uniform look and lasts longer between coats, but when it fails it peels and the prep gets expensive. Most cedar we install gets a semitransparent stain.
Every three to five years on exposed elevations, longer on protected ones. Refinishing on time is a wash and a recoat. Waiting until the wall is grey and open is a strip and rebuild, which costs several times as much.
The material costs more, the install takes longer because of the sealing and the rain screen, and it carries a maintenance bill the other materials do not. It is the most expensive wall we hang over its life. People choose it anyway because of how it looks, which is a completely legitimate reason.
Often the smartest way to buy it. Cedar shingle gables over fiber cement or engineered wood lap gives you the character where it is visible and keeps the maintenance down to a small, reachable area.
It is a furring cavity that holds the siding off the weather barrier so air can move behind the boards and dry the back face. In this climate, on cedar, yes. It is the difference between a wall that dries out after every storm and one that stays damp all winter.
Why Choose Sealed Siding?
The Best Choice for Cedar Siding Installation in Seattle
- Sealed on all six sides: Every board, back and cut ends included, before it is hung. This is the step that gets skipped, and it is the reason cedar cups.
- Ventilated rain screen: A furring cavity behind the boards so the back can dry between storms. On a wet climate cedar wall this is not an upgrade, it is the assembly.
- Stainless or hot dipped fasteners: Cedar's natural extractives corrode plain steel and bleed black streaks down a finished wall within the first winter.
- Honest maintenance talk: You get the refinish interval for your actual exposures before you commit to the material, not after the first summer surprises you.
